Compatibility Testing Laboratory
Bloodworks Northwest has provided compatibility testing for transfusion of blood and blood components to patients in King County Hospitals since 1944. Today, Bloodworks Northwest’s integrated transfusion services provide multiple options for hospitals, with an emphasis on quick and effective support for patient needs.
Our Integrated Transfusion Service Laboratories operate 24/7 to provide testing and blood components. We are linked in many area hospitals with HemoSafe® blood dispensing units that allow immediate access to a full range of red cell types and plasma—all tested and transfusion-ready. These “ultra-smart” refrigerators can store up to 120 units of blood. They are digitally linked directly to BloodworksNW Transfusion Service labs, and backed by sophisticated tracking and matching systems.
The Medical Director for our Integrated Transfusion Service Laboratories is Dr. Theresa Nester.

It depends on the test that is requested. Each test has its own sample requirements. Please search the test menu for specific test to look up sample requirements for that test. If more detail is needed, the lab associated with that test can be contacted directly. Please see above under Contact for specific laboratory phone number.
Each sample has to have a unique identifier and a date of draw. The laboratory can’t process samples without these two requirements. If they are not met the sample will be considered unacceptable and the institution will have to redraw the sample.
