| Additional Test Information | Many drugs have been reported to be associated with severe thrombocytopenia. Quinine, quinidine, and heparin are the drugs most commonly associated with thrombocytopenia. An increased binding of antibody to the patient’s platelets or random donor platelets in the presence of the offending drug is suggestive of drug-induced thrombocytopenia.
Accurate patient information is important to ensure that the correct drug is sent to the Platelet Immunology Laboratory for testing with the patient’s plasma/platelets. It is imperative to note whether or not the patient is still on the suspected drug. A positive test result provides relevant information, while a negative test result does not exclude a drug related antibody. A false negative test result may occur for a variety of reasons (the concentration of the drug added to the test was not appropriate; it may be a metabolite of the drug rather than the native drug that has caused the thrombocytopenia. |
